Cariņo: Economy of the Heart, conceived and choreographed by Anne Bluethenthal, articulates and celebrates the philosophy of Cariņo. The literal meaning of Cariņo is love, affection, tenderness, and endearment. For Bluethenthal, Cariņo also indicates a shift to a world that places its highest value on caring rather than on profit. This world premiere explores in movement, text, music and visual art, the cultural and global dimensions of caring. The strong, sensual, physicality that is the trademark of the woman-centered ABD ensemble, blends with the complex, sensual music of Ajayi Lumumba; the impassioned voices and lyrics of internationally-acclaimed singer Melanie DeMore and Mexican-American funk singer Mama CoAtl; the alluring poetry of LGBT /queer activist and cultural icon Judy Grahn, and the vibrant art of muralist Nadine Gay.
Now a full-length new work (Cariņo Part 1 was presented in SF in June 2007), Cariņo: Economy of the Heart features ABD dancers: Alyah Baker, Laura Elaine Ellis, Marina Fukushima, Lindsay Gauthier, Matema Hadi, Sami Knowles and Frances Sedayao. In addition, the evening features performances by Oasis for Girls in the lobby of Artaud at 7:40 pm (created in collaboration with ABD). (Sun. 3/23 @ 5:40 pm); and the work of Cariņo gallery artists: Orlonda Ufre - curator, with Nadine Gay, Stephanie Anne Johnson, Fan Lee Warren and TaSin Sabir. Collaborating artists include Stephanie Johnson: lighting design; Cassandra Carpenter: costume design; and Adele Prandini (Theatre Rhino): dramaturge.
Artistic director Bluethenthal explains Cariņo: Economy of the Heart springs from an examination of how value is determined in this global culture. Traditionally the caring and repairing work of women is the unseen and unwaged labor that enables all other activities; because it is not part of the economy, it is rendered invisible. In a culture like ours that is addicted to doing - to ever-increasing speed, effort, work, knowledge, and acquisition, the act of giving has receded far from the forefront of our minds."
At a moment in history when the escalation of disease and poverty, violence and war, global warming, government corruption, corporate greed, and oppression of the Third World seems overwhelming, small groups of women across the planet are organizing to challenge these injustices. These women's collectives are persisting in small and large victories that inspire even the most cynical and jaded among us. Cariņo weaves stories of global "cariņo" into the empowered, earthy, and impassioned choreography that is the trademark of the ABD ensemble which embodies grace and fury, solidarity and individuality, "rendering even the most difficult subjects with haunting beauty."
